Central Library, Le Mans Crescent, Bolton, BL1 1SE

Info

English for Speakers of Foreign Languages.  ESOL classes run at the Central Library in partnership with The Workers Educational Association.  Currently there is a beginners’ class and a variety of certificated classes for higher level students.   Every year before classes start there is an advertised open day where students can be assessed and enrol for classes. All classes run for 10 or 16 weeks and the higher level classes have an exam at the end of the course. It is essential that students attend every session.   Additionally Bolton College runs classes at High Street Library. For more information please contact High Street Library direct. Bolton College also offers a variety ESOL classes at the Central Library from time to time.  Ask at any of our libraries and we can provide a printout of ESOL classes and providers in Bolton.

Many of our libraries run beginners’ IT classes in partnership with Bolton Community College. These classes run for three weeks (with 7.5 hours tuition in all). Currently there are classes on a variety of days and times at the Central Library; Breightmet Library; Westhoughton Library; Farnworth Library; Harwood Library; High Street Library; Bromley Cross Library and Horwich Library.   There are also computer classes  at Breightmet Library and Little Lever Library in partnership with Active Ageing. With all classes the best plan is to speak to the hosting library where your name can go on a waiting list. Some libraries have shorter lengths of time to wait than others and what is on offer changes all the time!  Additionally many libraries provide computer mentor sessions with one to one tutoring provided by a volunteer – your local library may well host these sessions and the Central Library provides a variety of these at different times. Do ask at any library for more details and to book your place.

From time to time we offer a range of other courses for adult learners and we host reading, knitting and scrabble groups at various libraries. Do look out for posters or online publicity - or ask at your local library. We also supply information about other learning opportunities in Bolton, whether by providing local prospectuses or by offering free taster sessions during Adult Learning Week or Family Learning Festival.

The courses and classes recruit well and we are growing year on year (we started in 2006) - we have had over 1000 enrolments this year. Most of our classes are languages, art and craft, history based, with a little music and creative writing included as well. We respond to demands and this determines our programme offer.
